📍 A hidden gem in Seongsu
— Off the beaten path, but deeply rooted in Korean flavor and hospitality.
The Story Behind This Place
Minjeong Sikdang is a cozy local restaurant tucked away in Seongsu, Seoul—but one spoonful, and you’ll know it’s something special. Even I (your editor), who doesn’t usually drink much, find myself craving a sip of soju after tasting their broth.
In Korea, there’s a dining culture called banju, where strong, comforting soups are enjoyed with alcohol. Their signature dish, gukmul suyuk (brothy boiled beef), hits all the right notes—rich, clean, and deeply warming.
It’s not some recipe that popped into the chef’s head one day. It’s a dish shaped over time, with input and affection from regulars.
The space feels just as heartfelt. Built inside an old Korean home, it’s rare to see this kind of warm, familiar layout in modern Seoul.
If you’re visiting Korea, this place gives you a true taste of what a Korean meal can feel like—homey, honest, and full of care. From the moment you walk in, there’s no show or performance. Just quiet hospitality that speaks for itself.
That’s why I don’t just think of Minjeong Sikdang as a good restaurant. I see it as a place that beautifully captures Korea’s unique way of sharing food—and a little soju—with the people you care about.
